Mr. Robert A. Anker
Re: Board, American Academy of Actuaries
Dear Mr. Anker:
Some months ago, the Academy President Richard Robertson made a decision on behalf of the Board of Directors not to set up a blue ribbon panel to examine certain ASOP violations as I had suggested. Only later did he call on the Board to ratify his decision, which it did. This led me to believe that the members of the Board are stick figures, who enjoy the prestige of being on the Board, but of whom nothing is required of expected, the Bylaws notwithstanding.
You need to read your duties and powers in the Bylaws: "The Board shalläexercise all such powers and do all such things as may be appropriate to carry out the purposes of the Academy." The purposes include maintaining standards of professionalism and promoting communications on public policy issues and professionalism to public policy makers.
There have been grave departures from these goals, as I noted in my Jan. 17 letter to you and other interested Academy members and persons. This was sent together with reprints from the Christian Science Monitor; for your convenience, I am enclosing the Jan. 4 Op-Ed article.
This letter is being sent my Certified Mail, Return Receipt Requested, to ensure that you are really out there and do care about our profession. I am mortified to have come to realize that the Academy leadership, the directors included, is acting in concert with those who wish to undermine Social Security. There are many actuaries who are upset by this, and I enclose a letter from James B. Gardiner, FSA 1935.
Sincerely yours,
David Langer
